Tomato is the region key vegetable line, with a near-continuous supply window thanks to the year-round mild climate and several crop cycles a year.
Growing conditions
Part of the area is grown under protected cover to control irrigation and pests and to limit rain damage; the rest is open field by season. That mix keeps supply steadier than open field alone.
Season
Harvest runs year-round, peaking in the dry season from November to April. In the wetter months volumes fall and the share making grade one is lower.
Cultivation and picking
Each cycle follows one agreed protocol: variety, plant density, irrigation regime, permitted inputs and pre-harvest intervals. The pre-harvest interval is the most tightly checked point in the vegetable range, because cycles are short and picking is continuous.
Fruit is picked at the maturity that suits the transit distance: the further it travels, the less ripe it is picked.
After harvest
Produce is cooled early, graded by size and colour, cleared of cracked or damaged fruit, and packed to the customer specification. Fruit meeting the processing grade goes to the frozen vegetable line.
